Sugar is having an unfashionable moment. The sweet stuff is being blamed on everything from diabetes and weight gain, to heart disease, and even cancer.
But are these claims really true? Or are they simply another case of pseudo-science? We’re here to set the record straight.
For years, a low fat diet was heralded as the key to health. Food manufacturers responded by creating our favourite products with fewer calories and grams of saturated fat. To maintain taste, they increased the amount of sugar instead. Today, critics are shunning the low-fat movement, encouraging us to eat high fat foods such as eggs, meat, fish, and butter, and reduce our consumption of whole grains, pasta, rice, potatoes, and even fruit.
But sugar is not the enemy. We are hard-wired to enjoy and crave sugar. Why? Because glucose is the primary fuel source for each and every one of our cells, including our brains. That’s right- our bodies literally run on sugar.
Foods demonized in the media as nothing more than sugary junk, are those such as cakes, donuts, ice cream and chocolate. But what are these foods equally as high in? FAT. These products offer the perfect ratio of fat to sugar. So why is it sugar, and not fat, that’s taking the blame? Sugar is just the victim in this equation. Many people forget that their high consumption of animal products and refined fats are most likely to blame for health problems and weight gain, especially when sugar is thrown into the mix.
Alone, sugar is not the cause of ill health. But when you eat sugar in conjunction with fat, the fat coats your insulin receptor sites and the cell walls, meaning that sugar can’t get through. The result? With nowhere to go, sugar stays in your blood, raising blood sugar and creating insulin resistance which in turn leads to fat storage, diabetes, and other diseases. So when these problems occur, it is fat consumption that one should address- sugar is merely guilty by association.
In no way do we believe that the processed foods referred to above, or those high in refined sugar, are health foods. With little to no nutrient content, and laden with chemicals, these are acidic substances within the body. Fruit however, should never be feared, as so many do today for its sugar content- it should be embraced in abundance. After all, the sugar found in fruit is in its most natural form, surrounded by fibre and water, and teaming with vitamins and minerals. Eat and drink a diet rich in fruit sugars and whole plant carbohydrates, and low in fat, and your body will become a fit, healthy and a fat burning machine!
Don’t fall for the myths about sugar- they are completely unfounded, and we at Raw Island are concerned that a swing towards high-fat, high-Protein diets will only worsen our already problematic epidemic of obesity, diabetes and Cancer.
That’s why we’re here to set the record straight- and we want you, our customers to see the truth for themselves.
